Dr Dan Gottlieb, renowned psychologist and therapist, spoke at the SSBJCC in April, 2008, to a large and appreciative group, about what it means to be human in the face of life’s challenges, and, in particular, about undiscovered wisdom and understanding that all humans share. He read from his book, Letters to Sam, written for his grandson, who is growing up with a diagnosis of autism.
The group also had the opportunity to engage with Dr. Gottlieb in a question and answer period, where questions ranged from insight into family relationships to coping with unexpected losses and life changes. Dr. Dan Gottlieb attributes much of his wisdom and compassion to having experienced severe losses—of his mobility from a near-fatal car accident, and the death of his sister and parents. He has a unique understanding of both the solitude and growth that accompany suffering.
Dr. Gottlieb hosts “Voices in the Family,” an award-winning mental health call-in radio show aired on WHYY 90.9 FM, Philadelphia’s local public radio station. He writes a bimonthly column for the Philadelphia Inquirer titled “Inside Out,” and is the author of Voices in the Family and Voices of Conflict, Voices of Healing.
Dr. Gottlieb wrote a regular column in the Philadelphia Inquirer, until this past June (2008). You can read Dr. Gottlieb's past Philadelphia Inquirer columns, and read up on his other activities and events at his website: www.drdangottlieb.com/
