Purim Program at Stein Assisted Living gets big turnout!

On March 15, 2009, Ohr Tikvah sponsored a Purim Program for the residents of Martin and Edith Stein Assisted Living Residence in Somerset, NJ.

Our community Rabbi, Robin Nafshi, shared insights about Purim and along with Mauri Tyler, a Drum Facilitator, residents used drums and other noisemakers as larger than usual groggers.

Pictures will be posted shortly; our thanks to the staff of the Stein Assisted living residence, Ms. Tyler and Rabbi Nafshi for an entertaining and enlightening afternoon!

Financial Losses/Personal Gains:

Staying emotionally and spiritually healthy in tough economic times

“As we face these difficult economic times and experience the personal impact, and potential losses, we often feel alone and unprepared how to gain back our footing and move forward. This program can give participants the opportunity to hear from both a social worker and a Rabbi,  and come to recognize key personal assets that can provide strength in this time of financial loss,” said Rabbi Nafshi.

“Reframing our unique circumstances and opening up to new ideas to maintain the balance in our lives despite financial challenges can provide spiritual energy and new tools for coping during difficult periods,” added Jeanne Lankin, L.C.S.W., A.C.S.W.

NOTE: A detailed printed companion for this topic is being prepared.

                                            Details coming soon!

This program was held Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at 7:00 PM at the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum Jewish Community Center.

A follow up handout will soon be available from Ohr Tikvah.

A Musical Chanukah Program of

Healing and Celebration

 with Cantor Ted Labow

Cantor Labow entertained an enthusiastic audience with songs celebrating the Chanukah story and traditions!

December , 2008

Just as the lights of Chanukah begin as one lonely flame, then grow and fill the room aglow, so, too, did the beautiful voice of Cantor Ted Labow bring light into our lives, lifting our spirits with his magnificent voice and offering us a sense of well-being and wholeness.

Feel Good about Your Body

and the Food You Put in It

In October, 2007, Ohr Tikvah presented " Feel Good about Your Body and the Food You Put in It." Our thanks to our presenters for giving of their time and skills:

  • Rabbi Mendy Herson, executive director of the Chabad Greater Somerset County, who addressed the relationship the Jewish community has to eating and body image.

  • Kim Leatherdale, a licensed counselor and art therapist, and Leslee Oliu, a registered dietitian and medical nutrition therapist, who talked about how body image is formed and how it is linked to health and self-esteem. They also will explain how to combat the negative messages we receive from the media and the community we live in, and invite participants to ask questions and share their stories.

  • Moderated and introduced by Leslie Becker-Phelps, Ph.D., a psychologist and former Board member of Ohr Tikvah
